Live bee colony removal from a wooden cable spool in Gardena, CA

Project overview

A Gardena homeowner had an old wooden cable spool in the side yard that a swarm had turned into a home. Bees were using the round center hole as an entrance, and a growing colony was building comb inside the hollow core.

The spool sat right beside a walkway the family used every day, and the kids' play area was nearby.

What the client needed

The family wanted the bees gone quickly but preferred them saved rather than killed, and wanted the spool cleared so it could be thrown away.

  • Live removal of the colony
  • Safe work area away from the house
  • All comb removed from the spool core
  • Spool left safe to dispose of

Our approach

Working in full bee suits, we opened the spool core, vacuumed the bees alive, cut out the comb and transferred brood comb into a hive box so the colony could be relocated to a beekeeper.
